2 Samuel 18 (vv. 9-13)

In the midst of the rout, Absalom rides beneath the thick branches of a great oak, and he is suddenly left suspended as his mule runs on. Helpless and exposed between earth and sky, he is discovered by one of David’s men. When the soldier reports it to Joab, he refuses to strike the king’s son, recalling David’s public command to protect Absalom.

패주하는 가운데 압살롬은 큰 상수리나무의 무성한 가지 아래를 지나가다가 갑자기 나무에 걸려, 노새는 달아나고 그는 공중에 매달린 채 남겨진다. 땅과 하늘 사이에 무력하게 드러난 그를 다윗의 한 병사가 발견한다. 그 병사는 이 일을 요압에게 알리지만, 다윗이 공개적으로 압살롬을 보호하라고 명한 말을 기억하며 왕의 아들을 치기를 거부한다.
