2 Samuel 18 (vv. 1-5)

David organizes his forces into divisions under Joab, Abishai, and Ittai. Though he offers to march out with them, the soldiers urge him to remain in the city because his life is worth more to the kingdom than theirs. Standing beside the gate as the troops file out in ordered ranks, David gives a deeply personal command to the commanders and all the soldiers within earshot: they are to deal gently with the young man Absalom.

다윗은 군대를 요압과 아비새와 잇대의 지휘 아래 여러 부대로 편성한다. 그는 직접 함께 나가겠다고 하지만, 병사들은 왕의 생명이 나라에 훨씬 더 중요하다고 하며 성 안에 머물 것을 간청한다. 성문 곁에 선 다윗은 수백 명과 수천 명 단위로 질서 있게 행진해 나가는 군대를 바라보며, 지휘관들과 모든 병사들이 듣는 가운데 젊은 압살롬을 너그러이 대해 달라고 간절히 명한다.
