2 Samuel 15 (vv. 1-6)

Absalom presents himself like a royal figure, riding with a chariot, horses, and fifty runners before him. Early each morning he stations himself by the road to the city gate, where legal cases are brought, and warmly greets the people of Israel. He flatters them, tells them their claims are just, and suggests that the king has neglected them. Instead of receiving their bows, he reaches out, embraces them, and kisses them, winning their affection and quietly stealing the hearts of the nation.
