During Pekah’s reign, Tiglath-Pileser of Assyria captures northern cities and deports the people, while in Judah Jotham does what is right and rebuilds the Upper Gate of the temple, though the high places remain. This scene juxtaposes two destinies: on one side, a sorrowful line of captives leaving Galilee under Assyrian guard; on the other, Jotham overseeing the construction of the temple gate in Jerusalem. The contrast highlights judgment on Israel, partial faithfulness in Judah, and the gathering storm as Aram and Israel begin to threaten Judah.
