2 Corinthians 12 (vv. 5-8)

After speaking of great revelations, Paul turns to his weakness and describes the thorn in his flesh, a torment allowed to keep him from becoming conceited. The image should show him in visible distress, bowed in earnest prayer, pleading repeatedly for relief. Rather than graphic pain, the thorn should be conveyed symbolically, perhaps through a dark, oppressive presence or a sharp desert thorn branch near him, while the setting reflects loneliness, struggle, and spiritual testing.

큰 계시에 대해 말한 뒤, 바울은 자신이 교만해지지 않도록 허락된 육체의 가시, 곧 자신을 괴롭히는 고통을 말한다. 이 이미지는 바울이 분명한 괴로움 속에서 몸을 굽히고 간절히 기도하며 반복해서 그것이 떠나가기를 구하는 모습을 보여주어야 한다. 고통을 직접적으로 묘사하기보다, 가시는 어두운 압박감이나 곁에 놓인 날카로운 광야의 가시나무 가지 같은 상징으로 표현하고, 배경은 고독과 씨름, 영적 시험의 분위기를 담아야 한다.
