2 Chronicles 36 (vv. 1-4)

After Josiah’s death, the people of the land place Jehoahaz on the throne in Jerusalem. The moment is politically tense and short-lived, for Egypt’s power quickly overshadows Judah. Pharaoh Necho removes Jehoahaz, imposes heavy tribute on the land, renames Eliakim as Jehoiakim, and carries Jehoahaz away to Egypt, showing that Judah’s kingship is no longer free but controlled by foreign empires.
