1 Samuel 3 (vv. 1-3)

The scene opens in the quiet sanctuary at Shiloh during the night. Samuel, still a boy, lies down in the house of the LORD near the ark of God, while the aged priest Eli rests in his own place, his failing eyesight emphasizing his weakness and the spiritual dimness of the time. The lamp of God has not yet gone out, and its small but steady flame becomes a powerful symbol that divine presence still remains even when visions are rare.

장면은 밤중 실로의 고요한 성소에서 시작된다. 아직 어린 소년 사무엘은 하나님의 궤가 있는 여호와의 집 가까이에 누워 있고, 늙은 제사장 엘리는 시력이 약해진 채 자기 처소에 누워 있다. 거의 꺼지지 않은 하나님의 등불은 그 시대에 계시가 드물었음에도 불구하고 하나님의 임재가 여전히 남아 있음을 상징적으로 보여 준다.
