1 Samuel 11 (vv. 1-3)

Nahash the Ammonite stands before the besieged city of Jabesh Gilead as its desperate elders come out to negotiate. The men of Jabesh ask for a treaty, but Nahash answers with a cruel condition: the gouging out of every right eye to disgrace all Israel. The elders, shaken and humiliated, request seven days to seek help, creating a tense pause between threat and possible rescue.
