1 Kings 19 (vv. 9-13)

At Horeb, Elijah shelters in a cave and then stands at its mouth as overwhelming natural forces pass by: a tearing wind, an earthquake, and fire. Yet the Lord is not revealed in those displays alone; after them comes a gentle whisper. Elijah covers his face with his cloak, recognizing the holy presence without seeing God directly.

호렙에서 엘리야는 동굴에 머문 뒤 입구에 서서 산을 찢는 바람과 지진과 불이 지나가는 것을 본다. 그러나 주님은 그런 압도적인 현상 속에만 계시지 않고, 그 뒤에 들려오는 세미한 속삭임 가운데 임하신다. 엘리야는 하나님의 얼굴을 직접 보지 않은 채 그 거룩한 임재를 깨닫고 겉옷으로 얼굴을 가린다.
