1 Kings 12 (vv. 1-5)

At Shechem, Rehoboam stands before the gathered tribes as the newly approached heir to Solomon’s throne. Jeroboam, returned from Egypt, stands with the assembly of Israel and speaks for the people, asking that the heavy labor and oppressive yoke imposed by Solomon be lightened. Rehoboam listens but delays his answer for three days, creating a tense pause filled with expectation and uncertainty.

세겜에서 르호보암은 솔로몬의 왕위를 이을 자로서 모인 지파들 앞에 선다. 이집트에서 돌아온 여로보암은 이스라엘 회중과 함께 서서 백성을 대표하여 솔로몬이 지운 무거운 노역과 멍에를 가볍게 해 달라고 요청한다. 르호보암은 그들의 말을 듣지만 사흘 뒤에 다시 오라고 하며 대답을 미룬다. 그 순간은 기대와 불확실성이 뒤섞인 긴장으로 가득 차 있다.
